At the age of 26 I set off across the Atlantic to New York with my bike with the idea to travel to Ushuaia in Argentina, quiet why I am still not sure, but certainly it appealled to my sense of adventure. To be honest I was a little green at first, never having riden on dirt roads, and totally unaware of all the modifications that were available for the bike, and where I could get them etc. But it has been a very fast learning curve. I guess I am living proof that any regular biker can do something a little out of the ordinary.
By way of a quick introduction I was born and grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Attended Oatlands College, followed by University College Dublin, and the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business. Where I obtained my Primary Degree in Commerce, and my Masters Degree in Accountancy. After this I Joined Deloitte & Touche where I did my Articles and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. After nearly 4 years with Deloitte i decided it was time for a change, and it was in a pub over a pint of Guinness that I hatched the plan to ride the Americas.
So on the 11th of June 2007 I borded the Aerlingus plane to JFK and the adventure was underway.
The Bike
Possibly one of the biggest questions at the start of the trip was which bike to take. After some consideration it came down to three bikes, the Kawasaki KLR, the KTM 990, or the BMW R1200. Finally I settled on the BMW, and really I am glad I did. It has so much going for it. No chain, Fuel injection, great relaiability. Basically its a BMW! only problem is its a bit heavy which makes it a real pig in soft mud. But I love it and wouldnt change it for the world... well unless KTM want to sponsor me .. and give me lots of free stuff.
The Goal
The idea is to get to Ushuaia and then back to Buenos AIres for circa late January. After that my next decision is where to go next. Would love to ship to Cape Town and continue up through Africa and back home to Ireland. But I will need some serious funds first. So if anyone is reading this and feels like donating a few quid just click on the paypal link above.
Otherwise I will be coming back to Ireland and back to reality. Maybe Deloitte will want me back !
